Tryout Information

The Dancing Devils generally practice three times a week. Tuesday and Thursday practices are 2 hours long and Sunday practices are 3 hours long. In addition, the team also requires independent workout hours during the week to maintain strength and stamina.

Tryouts are held once a year, usually during the first week of September. Incoming freshman and other students interested auditioning for the team should keep an eye out for flyers posted around campus before school starts and are encouraged to sign up for tryouts at the activities fair, which is usually held during orientation. While the team is predominately female, we do encourage males to tryout. In fact, there are two male dancers currently on the team.

A general information meeting as well as multiple "teaching sessions" will occur in preparation for try-outs. It is strongly recommended that all who are interested in joining the team attend these events.

Tryouts have two components: a dance portion and a technique/skills section. The dance portion will consist of three separate 30 second long routines (hip hop, jazz, and pom styles). No independent choreography is needed. In the technique section, dancers will be asked to perform various skills to the best of their ability. Perfection is not necessary. We are looking for potential only. Skills will include: splits, straight leg-leaps, side leaps, switch leaps, triple turns, fouettes, and any special skills that a dancer feels they would like to perform.

Side Note: It is still possible to participate in Dancing Devils and be involved with the Duke Dance Department. Many members of the team take courses each semester in the department, and we even have a few Dance Minors on the team. However, it is recommended that reparatory participation take place during fall semesters because of basketball and nationals time constraints in the spring.
